What is Miswak? - Miswak is a twig or stick from from the Salvadora persica tree (known as arak in Arabic). It is used as an alternative to toothbrush in many Asian and African countries.
Is Miswak or Siwak a Sunnah? - According to Islamic traditions, it is a sunnah to use miswak. The Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, said: “Siwak cleanses the mouth and pleases the Lord”. Also in an another hadith the Prophet said: “If I had not found it a hardship for my Ummah, I would order them to make wudu’ for every salat and to use miswak in every wudu”.
How to prepare and use Miswak?
- First trim or chew off about one centimeter of the bark at one end of the miswak twig or stick.
- Then start chewing it until it softens and forms bristles. Softening can be expedited by dipping the stick in water which will soften and separate its fibers.
- Once the bristles are formed, brush your teeth as usual but without using toothpaste.
- When the brushy end is shredded, it can simply be cut or chewed further to form a fresh edge.
