Author: Shaykh Muhammad Mitwalli ash-Sha’rawi

Shaykh Muhammad Mitwalli ash-Sha’rawi was born in a middle-class family in the village of Daqadus, Egypt. He studied at Al Azhar University under renowned scholars such as Shaykh Ahmad Yusuf Nagati, Shaykh Ahmad `Imara, Shaykh Ibrahim Hamrush, and Shaykh Muhammad Mustafa al-Maraghi. Additionally, he drew inspiration from non-Azharite figures like Imam Hassan al-Banna.

Beginning his teaching career at Tanta's Institute of Religious Studies, Shaykh al-Sha'rawi later taught at institutes in al-Zaqaziq, Alexandria, and King Abd al-Aziz al-Sa'ud University in Makkah. He retired from Al Azhar in 1976 and served as Minister of Waqf under President Sadat for two years.

In 1980, Shaykh al-Sha'rawi initiated his renowned Friday lessons on Egyptian television, focusing on Quran interpretation (Tafsir), garnering an unprecedented audience among contemporary Azharite scholars.
